SCROLL

Understanding life in the abyssal dark

Sublevel 7 operates the world's most advanced deep-sea research platform, stationed above the Clarion-Clipperton Zone at 14°N 130°W. Our scientists study extremophile organisms, deep ocean carbon cycling, and bioluminescent ecosystems at depths where sunlight has never reached.

Since 2003, we have catalogued over 2,400 previously unknown species, mapped 180,000 km² of abyssal plain terrain, and maintained the longest-running continuous pressure-temperature record in the Pacific Ocean.

Our Scientific Work

Division 01

Bioluminescence Studies

Mapping the chemical languages of deep-sea organisms. We analyse spectral signatures, pulse frequencies, and ecological triggers for bioluminescent communication across 340+ species.

84 peer-reviewed publications · 2003–present

Division 02

Extremophile Biology

Investigating how life persists at pressures exceeding 400 atmospheres and temperatures near freezing. Our pressure simulation labs replicate conditions down to 6,000 metres.

Active cultures: 1,847 specimens in containment

Division 03

Deep Current Mapping

Autonomous underwater vehicles trace abyssal boundary currents and thermohaline circulation patterns. We maintain a network of 62 deep-ocean sensor moorings.

Data coverage: 19 years continuous · 180,000 km²
